Video: Crystal Fighters – Plage + A Word From its Creators, Beaty Heart
Charlie Rotberg, who you may be more familiar with as the tall one from Beaty Heart, recently made a video for the Crystal Fighters sun drenched sand storm hit, Plage, along with band mate James Moruzzi. We called him up and asked him about the video, this is more or less what he had to say…
Crystal Fighters approached us regarding a video last year for their fruity, summer ballad “plage”. They had basically already prepared their own ambitious treatment for a video along the lines of a beach party commencing just as the sun was hovering on the crest of the dunes about to depart for the day, flooding a sandy plain with twilight . The idea was that the hippy shindig would progressively get more and more seedy resulting in people getting it on amongst the dunes through to the early morning, like a synth pop sand orgy or something. Unfortunately their budget didn’t stretch to such an extensive production team and their management pointed them in our direction!
I liked their original ideas and we were all pretty psyched about doing a piece for another band (it also paid for our tour with The Rapture) so James and I got to work on recreating the psychedelic seediness that was the Crystal Fighters visions with techniques familiar to us such as video collage and data moshing. We ripped footage from home beach videos and porn films, layering them with our own swirly clips, making it as colourful and joyous as possible. The song has a huge sing’a'long chorus and is generally bubbly and fun so we wanted to keep it all quite light hearted and cheeky, something the band were into when discussing revisions to edits over emails. We ended up going a bit far as we were requested to “clean it up” and do a non-explicit edit, which I must say turned out better than the original anyway.
