Then & Now – True Womanhood.

Categorised as MIXTAPES., MUSIC.

True Womanhood are a trio out of Washington D.C who play what can only be described as experimental – the track below (that you can download for free by clicking here btw) was, “almost entirely made up of samples we made by clanging pieces of metal around in a mile-long sewer tunnel + bass guitar, 808 drumz, and vocals- all run through a severely malfunctioning tape delay.” Check that shit out. Here’s percussionist Noam’s then & now playlist; 5 songs he was listening to 5 years ago and 5 he’s listening to now.

THEN.

Four Tet – She Moves She.

5 years ago I was really in a period where I almost exclusively listened to electronic type music rather than bands with guitars in them. There was probably no album I listened to more than ‘Rounds’ by Four Tet.

Alice Coltrane – Shiva-loka.

I was never that in to jazz, but the harp sound on this kept turning up in the music I was listening to from 2005 (see manitoba) so I checked it out and that turned me on to a whole world of other stuff. She turned out to be Flying Lotus’ aunt or something, surprise surprise.

Ladytron – Discotraxx.

We read Dostoyevsky and listened to dark unhappy dance music and thought we were cool because the other kids were still listening to shitty indie folk.

Indian Jewelry – Lost My Sight.

My best friend was from Texas and turned me on to this Houston band that became one of my favourites. We went to see them in a tiny room and it was so loud and had a strobe light running the entire time. I couldn’t tell if I loved it, or was going insane, until it finished and I realized both.

Xploding Plastix- More Powah to Yah.

Yeah I guess I mainly just listened to electronica and weird jazz.

Salem – King Night.

These kids tuned in to some strange primal energy on this one. Killer track.

Magnetic man – I Need Air.

Dubstep turned into pop music this year, and it’s about time.

Shostakovich symphony 10.

I went and saw this the other night and it’s fucking killer, same way as the Salem track. The symphony was written right after Stalin died and it’s all about Stalin and the suffering of the soviet people. The composer was so surprised to have survived past Stalin, he spelt out his name over and over using musical notes for one of the movements.

Kanye West – All of the Lights.

Kanye made a game changing album. This song sounds like Bjork but it’s a pop song. Nobody in the world can do what he is doing right now.

Gorillaz – Stylo.

Damon Albarn is pretty much as cool as a white person can be. All his various projects since Blur have been great.

Album Review: Moon Duo – Circles‏

Repetition, confusion, and detachment… Yep, Erik “Ripley” Johnson and Sanae Yamada have returned from their nauseating wormhole to deliver a second Moon Duo album
