Rough Trade Staff Picks

Categorised as MUSIC., PROFILE.

Rough Trade is pretty much the bane of my life, every time I go in there I could (and have on occasion) spend hundreds of pounds on records. The problem is that they hooked me when I was just a kid, I’d go in every Saturday and Olly would pass me over a pile of the week’s releases tailored to my angular persuasions, plus he’d throw me a couple of wildcards to keep my taste moving and I’d spend about an hour poring over what I wanted vs. what I could afford. Then I’d leave poorer but far, far happier.

Olly has long gone but the deal is still the same, now I’ll walk up to the counter with a hefty selection and based on that I’ll be offered an even bigger selection! Cards will be swiped, finances will be plowed and I’ll still leave as happy as that sixteen year old self did all those years ago. My entire notion of record shopping and what it means to be a listener of music was incepted by Rough Trade, so I am at their mercy but am entirely comfortable with and grateful for that arrangement.

So, for that reason, the staff picks are, to me, the backbone of Rough Trade and should be rightly pored over and indulged by all.
