PAWS ft. Alice Costelloe of Big Deal – Sore Tummy

We gush about almost everything these guys do. Cokefloat was one of our favourite albums of last year. They make the kind of music that got me into punk and while I listen to the harder stuff as well now (Baptists album out next month is a tip for those that do to) this is where it all began. Below is Phil from the bands own words on the video.

“I guess I started thinking about ideas for a video in Autumn when we were on tour, something we could do for real cheap. On the tour there were leaves absolutely everywhere, even in the back of my amp. My flat mate studies prop design and stuff like that so she made me these trees, thousands of leaves and a night sky back round. I made a weird fish eye camera, we went into our practice space and this is what came out of it all.”

As two of the newest additions to the Troupe family, Tim and Lee (aka Vercetti) both hail from the humble Kent scene. Tim was one of the guys behind the newly renovated Peckham Palais‘ in house night South; which went onto play host to some of the capital’s most interesting line ups of 2012. Tim rounded off 2012 playing at Hydra’s NYE party and was then invited to play their NYD party after a hugely impressive set.
Lee was once a resident for Under The Radar’s 16+ phenomenon for 2 years, before setting up his own Dartford based night’s ‘Oh My Dub’ and ‘Ruckus’. He is also a resident for London’s Regression Sessions and last year was named as one of 10 finalists for Ibiza Rocks’ 2012 resident competition.

Catch them both on the Troupe stage at Bugged Out Weekender.

Odd Future’s Lucas Vercetti On Immigration

Posted by Marcus Harris on

Scion AV and Vice have spent the end of 2012 releasing an eight-part documentary series which examines Young Americans, their thoughts on the last year and modern American life in more general terms.  In the penultimate instalment the team talk to Odd Future’s Lucas Vercetti and other Young Americans about immigration and the issues around national identity for both insiders and outsiders.

You can watch the rest of the series, which includes perspectives on the President, the economy, partisan politics and social networking here.

Video: Hooray For Earth – Never / Figure

Posted by Marcus Harris on

In 2011 Hooray for Earth made an album called True Loves that I absolutely fell in love with, earlier this year it was released in the UK and I’m resisting the temptation to feature it once again as my album of the year. Hooray for Earth, specifically Noel Heroux, have the inimitable knack of creating pop songs that have the ability to wrap you up and transport you to another dimension entirely, all encompassing on both the emotional and sonic scale. Never/Figure was the result of Heroux revisiting the studio earlier this year and riffing on the ideas he explored in True Loves, beautifully realised in warm sounds, dream pop harmonies and now a seven-minute video that involves helicopters, explosions and physics.

Download/Video: La Shark/Fiction – Snowballin’

Posted by Mint Magazine on

Ahh the magic of Christmas. The sweet imagery propagated by advertising, the supermarket experience, Hollywood, and the parents of children under 10. Even the name itself possesses a degree of onomatopoeia, when breathily whispered into the chilling night air. “Christmassss”, the final lingering ‘S’s’ float like snowflakes from your warm lips. Children singing carols in middle-class middle-England towns, large happy families, merrily slaving over 15 course meals, and the dangling legs of jolly old Saint Nick over the crackle of logs on the fire, as he disembarks his sleigh for a pit-stop at your inviting abode. Why yes, you did leave milk and cookies for him (and a carrot for Rudolph).

Playfully winking at a handful of cultural references, while spreading their own festive cheer, La Shark and Fiction have collaborated for a convivial Christmas caper, titled Snowballin’. Lead singers Samuel Deschamps (La Shark) and Mike Barrett (Fiction) are joined by a bevy of band-mate elves, including a young Father Christmas (played by La Shark’s jovial bassist Love Maynard) and vocal cameos by lead guitarist Benjamin Francis Markham (La Shark) and Fiction’s multi-instrumentalist funnyman, James Howard. Fusing familial amiability with Christmas glam, they’ve even made the song available to download for free!

If this wonderful music video doesn’t melt the iciest of hearts, I don’t know what will… Drink it in boys & girls. Merry Christmatazz.

Video: Deptford Goth – Union

Posted by Marcus Harris on

Self-directed in anticipation of the release of his debut album on Merok next year, Deptford Goth is back and filling the void with his melancholic soundscapes. The video perfectly compliments the chilling and heartfelt sounds of the record with it’s intimate portrayal of Daniel Woolhouse’s journey through the experiences of the track, it’s delicately yet profoundly human and a prime example of how music and video are fundamentally intertwined.

‘Life After Defo’, the debut album from Deptford Goth, will be released early next year.

Download: K-X-P – Melody

Posted by Marcus Harris on

Finnish kraut force K-X-P have unveiled details of their second album “II” set for a February 2013 release on Melodic Records. The acid drenched trio have unleashed the first cut to be taken from the album, the anthemic ‘Melody’,  which encompasses the same driving basslines and motorik drums that we’ve come to love them for. Album details suggest a cameo appearance from previous collaborator Annie and A more pop flavour than the band’s debut. Roll on 2013!

After a year of taking on the world and winning Stay+ have firmly asserted themselves as the future of British electronic music, constantly one step ahead of the curve and winning themselves some impressive accolades along the way, most recently with this track being named Annie Mac’s record of the week.
