Jon Stanley Austin.
Jon is a photographer from Leeds who captures England in the same sort of vein as Martin Parr: turning inane British scenes in to colourful, catchy Kodak moments. He told us that taking bright, colourful photos makes him feel better about the fact he hasn’t left the country in about ten years.
I went on a classic British holiday with my girlfriend’s family in the Summer of last year. It was my first proper chance to get to know them all. Carol is my girlfriend’s step-mum. She makes amazing big dinners (including starters) and she does like to build upon her tan. This was taken in the town of Swanage in Dorset. Right on the south coast of England. Kim’s dad managed to find the most exotic beach in England.
This was taken in Leeds during the world cup 2010. They opened up the cricket ground and showed the matches on the big screen. I was intrigued by this couple. I thought it was cute that they both came in their England kit, and that although there were many spare seats around them, they had insisted to squeeze onto these two in particular.
My mum hasn’t decorated for a long time. This is her house. Kim was wearing this shirt, and sometimes I just take the photo because it makes sense.
I don’t know what TV show this is advertising, but I walked around a corner and saw exactly what is in this photograph. I thought it was George Bush… being obscured by a bush.
Rather elaborate caves being made on the beach. Using a boat as a roof.
This was shot on holiday in Swanage again. This shows how exotic it was for England. Open top buses transported holiday makers from the small town of Swanage to the beaches of Bournemouth. It was scary. Lots of over grown hedges and branches slapping everyone in the face. It was very windy too. But this lady was dressed for the sun.
This was taken in the arcades at Whitby – a Yorkshire sea-side town.
These are the moments I enjoy about photography. I was originally just aiming at the lady in the cap. But when I got the film back I noticed the triangle that had formed between said lady, the business looking man on the phone, and the painter. The other woman annoys me.
